« En général, je ne me préoccupe pas trop d’analyser ma musique. Je préfère me contenter de faire les choses plutôt que d’en parler » nous confie-t-il. Et Anouar Brahem fait bien les choses : ambassadeur et figure de proue du oud – le “luth oriental” préciserait-t-on par européocentrisme –, le Tunisien est aussi et surtout un compositeur de haut vol. Depuis le début de sa collaboration avec ECM dans les années 90, il a délivré quelques albums parmi les plus importants d’un genre souvent stéréotypé, le “jazz vs les musiques du monde”. Avec lui, point de clichés, mais une volonté de marier son savoir des harmonies orientales aux musiciens de tous pays : de l’Angleterre de John Surman à la Norvège de Jan Garbarek.

Et après deux disques en trio avec le pianiste François Couturier et l’accordéoniste Jean-Louis Matinier, « une expérience humaine magnifique » précise-t-il, Anouar Brahem a eu envie de se remettre en question. « J’ai toujours peur de m’installer dans quelque chose de trop confortable. J’avais envie de retravailler avec des musiciens orientaux parce que je peux retrouver certaines choses que je ne trouve pas avec des musiciens de jazz… » Résultat, le prince du oud a opté pour la formule quartette qui lui va comme un gant. “The Astounding Eyes of Rita” (ECM/Universal), titre hommage à un poème célèbre du grand Mahmoud Darwich (disparu en août dernier), offre de savoureux alliages entre le oud du maître de cérémonie et la clarinette basse du jeune Klaus Gesing.
