Aussi discrètement que sûrement, Anouar Brahem a construit en quatre décennies une œuvre unique dans le paysage du monde de la musique. À l’intersection de nombreuses traditions, des savants modes orientaux aux érudites improvisations du jazz, le natif d’Halfaouine, un quartier de Tunis, a construit un univers qui ne ressemble finalement qu’à lui. Lequel ne cesse de croître depuis, à l’image de son quartet créé en 2009 pour l’enregistrement de The Astounding Eyes of Rita, avec lequel il revisite son répertoire, tout en traçant d’inédites perspectives, du genre obliques. Pour ce dessein, le oudiste peut compter sur le soutien du bassiste Bjorn Meyer, « très actif dans le design sonore, créant des petits bruitages, ouvrant des pistes », et le clarinettiste Klaus Gesing, « un sens des détails qui ont toute leur importance ». À cette paire s’ajoute Khaled Yassine, au doigté subtil sur les darboukas et bendirs. Somme toute, de quoi aller bien au-delà des clichés d’un banal orientalisme jazz.
