Si Antigone apparaît à bien des égards comme le parangon de la tragédie, c’est parce que les forces qui s’y opposent sont exclusives et inconciliables. D’un côté Créon, qui croit que la loi est juste parce qu’elle est la loi, de l’autre Antigone, qui croit que le juste doit faire loi. D’un côté la loi de la cité, de l’autre celle du ciel ; d’un côté le respect de l’ordre, de l’autre le respect des morts ; d’un côté la sagesse de l’âge résolu aux compromissions, de l’autre la fougue jusqu’au-boutiste de la jeunesse. L’Hadès est le seul vrai vainqueur de ce conflit qui clôt la malédiction des Labdacides en fauchant ses derniers représentants : Créon ne gagne rien au final puisqu’on ne l’emporte jamais sur la mort. Choisissant la simplicité pour mieux faire entendre ce texte classique dans la belle traduction de Florence Dupont, René Loyon opte pour une boîte noire, quelques chaises et des costumes contemporains, laissant aux comédiens le soin de faire surgir l’évidence et la densité poétiques du texte sur fond d’images vidéo évoquant les guerres contemporaines, afin de rappeler que l’humanité de la tragédie grecque signe son universalité.
