Quel sens dramaturgique donnez-vous au dispositif scénique, quadri-frontal, et au dépouillement du plateau ?
Antoine Caubet : Ce choix est né de l’œuvre elle-même, qui trame en filigrane une réflexion très subtile sur la nature du théâtre : les personnages sans cesse se déguisent, se dépouillent de leur identité pour survivre, changent de « rôle ». Ainsi Edgar qui devient pauvre Tom, se couvre de boue et se réfugie dans la forêt, et bien sûr Lear, qui finit nu sur la lande. Ou encore Goneril et Régane, filles de Lear, qui peu à peu découvrent en elles-mêmes la cruauté, l’instinct de mort, la jalousie…. Shakespeare convoque ici tout le pouvoir de l’illusion théâtrale pour soudain faire surgir une falaise ou provoquer une tempête. « Cette tempête dans mon esprit / Fait que mes sens n’éprouvent rien d’autre / Que ce qui bat ici… » dit Lear. Toute la poétique de Shakespeare peut aussi être vue comme une métaphore de la violente tourmente qui ébranle l’esprit de Lear. Dès lors, les acteurs sur un plateau nu, sans accessoires, ni costumes, ni lumières, peuvent justement donner à voir la puissance d’imaginaire de ce théâtre monde. Un tel parti pris esthétique m’a amené à travailler et à envisager très différemment la représentation. La présence du public autour de l’espace de jeu, au plus près de l’action, change en effet radicalement la relation. La représentation dépend alors de l’intensité l’échange entre les acteurs et les spectateurs vis-à-vis de l’œuvre.
Votre démarche fait-elle écho au parcours de Lear, qui doit lui-même apprendre à vivre sans l’apparat du pouvoir, à devenir un homme, à « être » en dehors de son habit de roi ?
A. C. : Dès le moment où Lear renonce au trône et distribue le royaume, le pouvoir et ses modes de représentation commencent en effet à s’effondrer, comme si ce qui structurait la société s’écroulait et laissait place au chaos, au déchaînement de la violence. Nous basculons dans le monde de l’envers, celui du fou. Du coup, faire glisser l’incarnation des différents personnages d’un acteur à l’autre reflète aussi ce profond bouleversement.

Quatre acteurs endossent donc tour à tour tous les rôles. Comment avez-vous travaillé et orchestré la « partition »?
A. C. : Ma position de metteur en scène a dû évoluer… Pour organiser les métamorphoses et glissements successifs des rôles, il me fallait être en scène avec les acteurs, travailler avec eux. Ce déplacement s’est révélé très intéressant car il a évidemment déplacé mon point de vue. Mon adaptation s’attache moins à l’intrigue qu’à faire entendre le poème dramatique, avec toutes ses résonances métaphysiques sur le théâtre, le pouvoir, la trahison, la justice…. Elle met aussi en scène le brutal renversement de l’ordre du monde et des fonctions sociales que produit l’affaissement du royaume. Elle suppose donc de se défaire de tout code de jeu qui pourrait identifier les personnages par une attitude, un parlé ou un signe particulier. D’ailleurs, dans cette pièce, les êtres sont définis par les mots prononcés, qui décident de leur destin. Ils sont agis par le dérèglement du monde et y répondent comme ils peuvent. C’est la confrontation au chaos qui transforme leurs comportements.
Qu’implique cette approche de l’œuvre quant au travail de l’acteur ?
A. C. : Il faut renoncer à toute préparation intérieure. L’acteur doit être dans l’instant, suivre les mouvements du texte, l’action et le regard pour se mettre en jeu et établir la relation avec son partenaire, avec le public. Il faut que la représentation naisse maintenant, avec et pour les spectateurs présents à ce moment-là.
