Est-ce par goût du défi que vous montez Finnegans Wake ?
Antoine Caubet : On considère James Joyce comme un auteur littérairement extrêmement difficile. C’est vrai, notamment pour Finnegans Wake, œuvre réputée illisible. Celle-ci a été violemment attaquée à sa sortie en 1939. Virginia Woolf la tenait pour une œuvre d’une vulgarité sans limite. Beaucoup de ses soutiens ont lâché Joyce, l’accusant à demi-mots d’être devenu fou ou sénile. A ceux-là, Joyce répondait : « Vous n’y comprenez rien ? Ce n’est pas grave. Vous devriez vous la faire lire ».
Est-ce à dire que c’est une œuvre orale ?
A.C : C’est même une œuvre théâtrale. Joyce ajoutait : « ça n’est pas écrit du tout. C’est fait pour être écouté et regardé ». Et c’est vrai. C’est un véritable tour de force littéraire que l’on apprécie qu’à partir du moment où le texte est proféré et incarné. Le résultat est impressionnant. Se déploie alors la langue de Joyce, cette langue complexe, vivante, nerveuse, joyeuse, pleine d’humour et de jeux de mots tout droit venus d’Alice. D’une certaine manière, dans le domaine du théâtre français, Guyotat et Novarina sont les descendants de Joyce.

Au-delà de la langue, il y a aussi chez Joyce une multiplicité de références culturelles, pas toujours faciles d’accès…
A.C : Dans ce texte, Finnegans Wake se casse la figure de son échelle parce qu’il a trop bu. Il meurt. On assiste à sa veillée funèbre où tout le monde danse et boit, comme on le fait en Irlande. Puis il ressuscite parce qu’on renverse du whisky sur son cadavre et qu’il trouve que c’est gâcher. Il y a donc un premier niveau de lecture qui se passe de toute référence. Après, c’est tout le travail du théâtre, de la mise en scène et en jeu que de faire apparaître la dimension très riche de cette écriture. C’est là qu’est le vrai défi pour moi. Ne pas tomber dans le one-man show du conteur et par les outils du théâtre, rendre compte de la richesse sous-jacente de l’œuvre, sans la rendre aride, ni purement culturelle. Il ne faut pas oublier que les amis de Joyce, c’étaient les concierges des hôtels où il descendait. Avec Proust, ils n’auraient rien eu à se dire.
Quels sont donc vos choix de mise en scène afférents ?
A.C : Nous travaillons sur le premier chapitre du livre, que nous avons repris presque in extenso, dans la traduction de Philippe Lavergne. Sharif Andoura sera un conteur, rêveur, traversé par ces histoires, ces paysages et personnages que charrie le texte de Joyce. Derrière une toile où le film d’une rivière presque immobile mais toujours mouvante sera projeté, des acteurs feront un théâtre d’ombres vivantes. En arrière-plan, un pantin d’un mètre trente environ sera aussi tour à tour Finnegans Wake, la cabaretier, le guerrier légendaire du texte de Joyce, toutes ces figures avec lesquelles le conteur va jouer.
