Comme avant lui Sibelius (Lemminkäinen, Kullervo), Einojuhani Rautavaara (Le Vol du Sampo) ou Aulis Sallinen (Kullervo encore), Tapio Tuomela (né en 1958) a trouvé dans les légendes finlandaises une source intarissable d’inspiration. Il avait déjà composé en 2000, pour Musicatreize une œuvre tirée des recueils du Kalevala et de la Kantélétar. Son mélodrame avec chœur Antti Puuhaara raconte le voyage initiatique du héros, revenant de la forêt de Pohjola, au-delà de la rivière des morts (Tuonela), où l’avait abandonné son père adoptif (Œdipe n’est pas loin !). Le compositeur complète ainsi la déjà riche collection de contes musicaux des quatre coins du monde initiée depuis 2006 par Roland Hayrabedian et l’ensemble Musicatreize. Pour faire exister cet univers magique et inquiétant, Damien Caille-Perret, qui signe la mise en scène, convoque marionnettes et jeux d’ombre.
