Curieux contraste : Apollinaire s’engage dans les troupes françaises et part au front en 1915 (ce qui lui permettra d’être naturalisé), mais pour autant rien ne peut chasser sa nature de grand amoureux. Et non seulement il éprouve ardemment le sentiment et le désir de l’amour, mais il le formule aussi de manière limpide et superbe. Marie, Lou, Madeleine, Jacqueline… furent ses muses transmuant le réel et exaltant la passion. Blessé à la tempe en 1916, il reviendra avant la fin de la guerre. Même en des temps douloureux, Guillaume s’adresse longuement à Lou et Madeleine. « Et tes cheveux sont fauves comme le feu d’un obusqui éclate au nord » à Lou. « O hanches si blanches » à Madeleine, rencontrée dans le train entre Nice et Marseille. C’est dans un compartiment de train qu’a lieu le premier volet du diptyque, L’orchestre et les chœurs de ma bouche te diront mon amour, voyage polyphonique avec deux voyageurs. L’un, conteur, exprime la mélodie du verbe (Christian Sterne, interprète et metteur en scène), l’autre, musicien compositeur, celle d’une création musicale au fil des mots (Pascal Ducourtioux). Pierre Garin choisit la période de la grande guerre, des Lettres à Lou et Madeleine, dans son adaptation. Le second volet, Nos cœurs pendent ensemble au même grenadier, d’une tonalité plus érotique et nocturne, laisse une impression d’éphémère, de fragilité, de liberté et de sensualité. Des flâneries poétiques et musicales dans l’œuvre et la vie du poète…
