La musique du début du XXe siècle doit beaucoup au mouvement symboliste, en particulier au théâtre de Maurice Maeterlinck : pour Pelléas et Mélisande, bien sûr, que Debussy magnifie à l’opéra dès 1902, mais aussi pour Ariane et Barbe Bleue dont s’empare Paul Dukas (1907), puis, avec de substantielles modifications, Béla Bartók (Le Château de Barbe Bleue, 1911). Contrairement à Pelléas, Maeterlinck avait conçu son Ariane comme un véritable livret d’opéra : l’écriture en est plus vive et appelle une musique plus tranchante, ce qui convient bien aux architectures orchestrales de Dukas, post-romantique influencé par le wagnérisme. Difficile à mettre en scène, ce « conte lyrique » en trois actes est confié à Stefano Poda, dont le travail, toujours d’une grande force visuelle, s’appuie souvent sur une lecture symbolique des œuvres. Belle distribution avec Sophie Koch et Vincent Le Texier dans les rôles principaux, et Pascal Rophé, baguette idéale, dans la fosse.
