Cette 38e édition semble plus que jamais faire le pari de la jeunesse. Est-ce un choix ?
Ariel Paszkiewicz : Mettre en avant chaque nouvelle génération d’interprètes est un rôle que l’on s’est toujours donné. Cette année, nous poussons cette démarche avec des pianistes très jeunes, mais qui ont déjà prouvé leur talent. Le ton est donné dès le concert d’ouverture par Simon Bürki, pianiste éblouissant de 23 ans, ou avec le Canadien Kevin Chen, qui a remporté les Concours de Budapest et Genève et tout récemment le 1er Prix au Concours Rubinstein de Tel-Aviv. De même, Alexander Malofeev était déjà un grand pianiste à 15 ans. On oublierait presque qu’il n’en a que 22… Beaucoup ont déjà une histoire avec le festival ; ils ont parfois commencé avec le concert « Piano à portes ouvertes » où, cette année encore, sept jeunes artistes en formation supérieure sont à découvrir. Mais les générations précédentes ne sont pas oubliées avec François Chaplin, Nicolas Stavy, Michel Dalberto…

Chaque pianiste jouera Chopin bien sûr, mais aussi Rachmaninov, à l’occasion du 150e anniversaire de sa naissance. Tous ont-ils accepté facilement ?
A.P. : Tous n’ont pas forcément du Rachmaninov dans les doigts, mais ils ont joué le jeu en choisissant une étude ou un prélude et, au final, le festival permettra d’entendre l’intégralité des Études-tableaux op. 39. Et je me réjouis de pouvoir programmer des grandes œuvres plutôt rares comme la Deuxième Sonate que jouera Kevin Chen, le Trio élégiaque n° 1 par le Trio Metral ou les Six morceaux à quatre mains op. 11 qu’Hervé Billaut et Guillaume Coppola ont préparé spécialement pour le festival.
Selon vous, le lien est-il naturel entre les deux compositeurs ?
A.P. : Rachmaninov a toujours été admiratif de Chopin. C’est une belle filiation que l’on va pouvoir suivre, comme le montre le concert de clôture de Nathanaël Gouin avec les 24 Préludes op. 28 de Chopin puis les Variations que Rachmaninov a écrites à partir du Prélude en ut mineur. Plus généralement, les récitals, qui reflètent les affinités des pianistes invités, offrent de belles mises en perspective : avec Kreisleriana de Schumann pour Simon Bürki, des Préludes de Debussy pour François Chaplin ou encore Schubert pour Michel Dalberto.
