Deuxième des trois opéras de Haendel inspirés par le poème de L’Arioste Orlando furioso, Ariodante avait fait en 2001 son entrée au répertoire du Palais Garnier dans une production de Jorge Lavelli avec deux des ingrédients qui avaient porté le succès d’un enregistrement discographique paru en 1997 : Marc Minkowski à la tête de ses Musiciens du Louvre et Anne-Sofie van Otter dans le rôle-titre. Après plus de vingt ans d’absence, l’ouvrage revient à l’affiche de l’Opéra de Paris dans un spectacle coproduit avec le Metropolitan Opera de New York et confié à Robert Carsen, lequel avait déjà signé à Garnier en 1999 une Alcina plusieurs fois reprise. Entendue l’an dernier en Rosine (Le Barbier de Séville de Rossini), et Siebel (Faust de Gounod), la jeune mezzo canadienne Emily D’Angelo se confrontera à un rôle dont le lamento au deuxième acte, « Scherza infida », constitue le sommet musical et dramatique de cette histoire d’amour, d’honneur et de complot à la cour d’Ecosse, que, dans la fosse, Harry Bicket animera avec les pupitres de l’English Concert.
