À ce titre, ce groupe imaginé par Arto Tunçboyaciyan –chanteur, compositeur et mult-instrumentiste- est emblématique de la nouvelle scène du jazz contemporain arménien. Il vient d’être désigné à Londres par la BBC comme un des meilleurs groupes de World Music. Composé de douze musiciens de sensibilités différentes, issus des musiques traditionnelles, du jazz ou du classique, l’Armenian Navy Band se plait à mêler sonorités d’hier et d’aujourd’hui dans une joyeuse fusion musicale. Un courant défini malicieusement par son leader comme de « l’avant-garde folk music ». Sur scène, une rythmique rock cohabite avec les instruments traditionnels (kanon, doudouk, kamantcha…) et la musique composée par Arto Tunçboyaciyan nous emporte dans un monde étonnant, entre ivresse de la danse et rêveries mystiques. Le même Arto Tunçboyaciyan a composé la musique du film Voyage en Arménie de Robert Guédigiuian.
