Dernière tragédie lyrique de Lully et de son librettiste Philippe Quinault, Armide est postérieur de dix ans au célèbre Atys que l’Opéra Comique et l’Opéra royal de Versailles ont remonté l’an dernier, dans la fameuse production de 1987 concoctée par Jean-Marie Villégier et William Christie, qui avait tant marqué les esprits. Œuvre rarement mise à l’affiche, cette Armide bénéficie de la mise en scène de Marshall Pynkoski, fin connaisseur de l’œuvre de Lully : il avait signé un Persée remarqué, présenté sur cette même scène en 2004. La distribution fait la part belle aux jeunes chanteurs (la soprano Peggy Kriha Dye dans le rôle-titre et le ténor Colin Ainsworth dans celui du chevalier Renaud), épaulés par le Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, ensemble de référence au Canada pour le répertoire baroque sur instruments d’époque.
