Entendu avec le saxophoniste Jacques Schwarz-Bart, la flûtiste Naissam Jalal ou le chanteur David Linx, ce batteur appartient à une génération trentenaire de musiciens qui, à l’exemple de ses cousins de la Caraïbe cubains ou portoricains, cherche à concilier une culture rythmique pluriséculaire avec le langage du jazz le plus contemporain. Pas étonnant que l’on pense à Dafnis Prieto ou à Miguel Zenon en écoutant sa musique : elle participe d’un même élan qui vise à activer des cellules rythmiques traditionnelles au cœur même du jazz le plus vif, à engager ses racines sans tomber dans le folklorisme, en évitant à tout prix les clichés exotiques.
Batterie architecte
Avec rigueur et exigence, Arnaud Dolmen relève ce défi, puisant dans le gwoka (la musique traditionnelle de la Guadeloupe, son île de naissance) moins des climats qu’une colonne vertébrale sur laquelle construire sa musique. Car la batterie, sous ses baguettes, est loin de se contenter de garder le pulse. Elle participe à l’architecture des compositions, à l’unisson avec le piano, ou en contrepoint du tandem de saxophones ténors (Adrien Sanchez et Francesco Geminiani, dans une belle mise en miroir), ce qui donne une couleur particulière à son projet qui, sur disque comme sur scène, prend le nom de « Adjusting ».
