Comment cette rencontre artistique à trois a-t-elle pu avoir lieu ?
Arnaud Meunier : En 2006, j’ai mis en scène La demande d’emploi de Michel Vinaver dans le théâtre d’Oriza Hirata à Tokyo tandis que je créais Gens de Séoul d’Oriza Hirata à Chaillot. À cette occasion, j’ai provoqué à Paris la confrontation entre ces deux écritures singulières, ironiques, « banales », quotidiennes et dont la précision rythmique ressemble à une partition musicale. Depuis, l’entente continue entre Vinaver et Hirata.
C’est la version hyper-brève de Par-dessus bord de Vinaver que vous avez choisie, traduite en japonais, puis réécrite par Hirata à la manière de Vinaver…
A.M. : Hirata a été sidéré par l’actualité de la pièce au Japon et a proposé pour la « réécriture » des principes d’adaptation sur lesquels nous nous sommes mis d’accord. Des années 70 de la pièce initiale, nous sommes passés aux années 2009 ; à la société française produisant du papier toilette – un signe essentiel de la comédie – bientôt rachetée par les Américains, nous avons substitué une entreprise fabriquant les fameux sièges toilettes automatisés, une maison familiale japonaise qui se fera racheter par un fonds d’investissement dirigé par un Français. De plus, le personnage du juif est remplacé par un Rwandais ayant échappé au génocide car le Japonais, profondément insulaire, peut être « choqué » que sa fille se marie avec un Noir comme dans la pièce initiale, le représentant de commerce français voyait d’un mauvais œil le mariage de sa fille avec un juif.
En quoi consiste l’écriture « à la manière de … » ?
A.M. : C’est un exercice de style qui a consisté pour Hirata à conserver le morcellement du discours et de la dramaturgie de Vinaver, tout en restant fidèle à la finesse naturelle de sa langue personnelle. On obtient un théâtre fusion comme on parle de cuisine fusion. Il s’agit d’une recréation puisque Vinaver est allé au Japon et a continué l’adaptation en écrivant « à la manière de Hirata » : la pièce finale a été modifiée, un work in progress permanent…

Quel est le sujet de la pièce ?
A.M. : C’est une comédie sur la mondialisation, en référence à l’histoire du capitalisme et à la mythologie japonaise via le shintoïsme. Ce questionnement dramaturgique est universel : que représente l’entreprise pour l’individu en temps de crise ? Ce n’est plus un sentiment d’appartenance qui prévaut, mais la peur de se faire éjecter du monde professionnel. Au Japon, la crise est survenue relativement tard et les conséquences sont dramatiques. La pièce interroge le rapport de l’individu à l’entreprise, à l’avenir et à sa vie.
