Partagée entre Bombay où elle vit et Madras où se trouvent ses origines tamoules, la chanteuse Aruna Sayeeram a grandi dans un environnement éminemment musical : sa mère fut son premier professeur de musique et son père, esthète, accueillait dans son salon les plus grandes figures des arts classiques indiens. Autant dire que celle qui bénéficia de l’enseignement de Sangita Kalanidhi T. Brinda était prédestinée pour réussir dans la voie qu’elle s’est choisie. C’est ainsi qu’entre un projet ouvert à d’autres influences et un récital suivant scrupuleusement les codes de la tradition du Sud de l’Inde, cette voix au timbre profond et aux improvisations fécondes est depuis de longues années considérée comme la référence majuscule du style carnatique.
