Née à Bombay mais attachée à Madras où se trouvent ses origines tamoules, Aruna Sayeeram est sans conteste la grande voix du chant carnatique d’Inde du Sud. Pour autant, celle qui a grandi dans un environnement familial musical et bénéficia de l’enseignement de Sangita Kalanidhi T. Brinda a su renouveler l’approche du répertoire des ragas : parce qu’elle en maîtrise toute la science, timbre profond et improvisations fécondes, le « cygne noir parmi les cygnes blancs » (comme elle s’auto-définissait autrefois) a tissé des passerelles avec d’autres musiques, du Grégorien au flamenco. Autant de projets originaux, transversaux, qui ont enrichi son matériau originel, repoussant les frontières d’une musique séculaire.
