Silhouette fuselée, sculptée dans l’ébène ou au contraire figure famélique, rongée par la misère : le corps africain porte encore souvent les clichés que lui colle le regard occidental. « Comment s’affranchir de ces visions ? » demande Robyn Orlin. Or sur le continent, le corps semble tout aussi problématique, « quand il n’est tout simplement pas un sujet tabou. », constate-t-elle. « Je crois que l’Occident a colonisé le corps africain, même lorsqu’il essayait de ne pas le faire, même quand il faisait preuve de respect. Nous nous retrouvons alors avec des corps qui sont imprégnés des cérémonies et des rituels du passé et du présent, mais comment pouvons-nous amener des cérémonies dans le futur ? » Voilà donc que la chorégraphe sud-africaine entreprend de gratter les images dominantes pour en révéler les schèmes intimes et politiques. Elle partage ces questionnements avec huit performeurs issus de l’École des Sables, fondée à Dakar par Germaine Acogny, pour développer de nouvelles pratiques chorégraphiques à partir du territoire africain. Ainsi est née la pièce At the same time we were pointing a finger at you, we realized we were pointing three at ourselves… A chacun de donner suite aux points de suspension !
