Depuis sa sortie du CNAC en 1995, Johann le Guillerm est vite devenu une attraction, dans cet univers du cirque en profond renouvellement. Le projet du même nom a débuté en 2001. Des étapes en ont déjà été montrées à la Villette, au festival d’Avignon, aux Subsistances de Lyon… Cette fois, Johann le Guillerm investit la Grande Halle pour un mois où il présente Secret, dans l’espace chapiteau, Monstration, exposition déambulatoire sous la halle, et la Motte IV, « phénomène de cirque minéral et végétal ».
S’il est devenu une attraction, c’est peut-être parce que Johann le Guillerm fixe à son travail l’objectif à la fois simple et immodeste de l’art : tenter de modifier les points de vue sur le monde. Les nôtres et puis le sien. « Son travail s’inscrit dans ce qu’il appelle la science de l’idiot, c’est-à-dire la science de celui qui ne sait pas ». Joli paradoxe à l’origine d’une démarche de renouvellement du regard aux atours scientifiques et aux détours poétiques. Avec Attraction, le Guillerm se penchant de plus en plus près de la plus petite des lignes – le point – parie que la métamorphose du monde passe par un changement de focale. Il s’attaque donc au microcosme pour donner à voir autrement le macrocosme, modifie la sensibilité du regard pour créer « un chaos mental » chez le spectateur. Dans cette perspective, il dompte des objets dans Secret, perché sur la pointe de drôles de poulaines métalliques. Pour Monstration il invente des machines-outils, lunettes « imaginographes », et avec la Motte IV il crée un phénomène de foire, « embryon de la Terre qui peut aider l’homme à comprendre qu’il est sur un ensemble ». La Terre, il l’avait lui-même parcourue pendant un an et demi avant d’entamer ce projet.
