L’Atys de 1987 a marqué les esprits. À bien des égards, il a été le révélateur de la « révolution baroque » qui déjà était en marche en France et en Europe. Mais le retentissement de la production n’a pas concerné que la musique. Son impact sur la mise en scène, les possibilités qu’il offrait à l’interprétation théâtrale ont ouvert de nombreuses voies où aujourd’hui encore il y a tout lieu de s’aventurer, comme le suggère William Christie : « Si les acteurs renouaient avec l’art de la déclamation et un travail vocal comparable à celui des chanteurs, le répertoire parlé baroque serait en aussi bonne santé que le répertoire lyrique ». Le chef des Arts florissants récuse cependant l’idée d’une simple reprise : « De l’équipe d’origine, nous ne retrouverons que Nicolas Rivenq et Bernard Deletré. Nous avons de nouveaux chanteurs dont il faut respecter l’art et la personnalité. Stéphanie d’Oustrac succède à Guillemette Laurens et à Jennifer Smith dans le rôle de Cybèle : ces trois merveilleuses interprètes auront chacune bâti le personnage avec leurs individualités ». Avec les chœur et orchestre Les Arts Florissants et les danseurs de la Compagnie Fêtes galantes et Gil Isoart de l’Opéra National de Paris.
