« Je vais bâtir des poèmes assez vastes et solides pour que les gens puissent s’y promener, y manger et boire… » écrivait Dylan Thomas. Convaincu que le théâtre peut faire feu de tout texte, Stuart Seide a décidé d’explorer les possibilités scéniques d’Au Bois lacté, œuvre majeure du poète gallois. Cette pièce radiophonique, enregistrée la première fois en 1954 dans les studios de la BBC par Richard Burton et son père adoptif, Philip, homme de théâtre dont le metteur en scène lillois a suivi les cours dans sa jeunesse new-yorkaise, fait ainsi ses débuts sur les planches. Le défi que lance Dylan Thomas et que relève Stuart Seide est de « jouer tout », selon l’impératif de Vitez, autre maître du directeur du Théâtre du Nord. Le tout, en l’occurrence, est celui d’une petite ville et de ses lieux, de ses habitants et de leurs secrets, de leurs cancans, leurs confidences et leurs aveux. Neuf acteurs, associés à deux narrateurs, font naître soixante-dix personnages, en explorant ce que le théâtre est capable d’évoquer, de suggérer et de « donner à voir » sans tout montrer, en évitant surtout la reconstitution : « Tout, selon le beau mot de Shakespeare, est déjà suggéré « in the mind’s eyes », dans les yeux de l’esprit. », dit Stuart Seide.
La scène aux dimensions du poème
Le scénographe Philippe Marioge a conçu un plateau entre échiquier et calendrier de l’Avent, où trappes et volets se soulèvent pour permettre le jaillissement des personnages et des accessoires du décor. Celui-ci, volontairement simple, est fait du bois du titre et de celui qui domine la décoration des pubs, comme au White Horse, à New York, où Dylan Thomas acheva sa vie dans le whisky… La scène aux dimensions du poème offre donc le cadre idéal au grouillement du petit peuple de ce paradis perdu. Ce dernier est davantage un retour à l’enfance qu’un retour à la terre, et caractérise la poésie cosmique de Thomas évoquant, selon les mots de Stuart Seide, « le temps qui passe, la mort, l’effacement et la trace, la capacité qu’a l’être humain de s’enflammer et se consumer pour des pulsions innocentes. » Réunissant acteurs confirmés et jeunes gens issus des deux premières promotions de l’EPSAD, Stuart Seide, qui continue, en professeur et praticien de la scène, à « démultiplier les figures de l’échange et de la transmission », fait appel à l’imagination et à la complicité créatrice du public pour explorer, avec lui et les siens, cette fable chorale dont la force vitale n’a d’égale que la beauté revêche.
