Une bande de brigands au grand cœur qui ferraillent pour l’honneur contre la corruption d’Etat, des truands des bas-fonds, des fonctionnaires véreux, des péripéties en bataille et bien des ripailles… Au bord de l’eau, récit populaire de Shi Nai-an, traverse la Chine du 12ème au 13ème siècle, et plonge au cœur de la société sous la dynastie Song. Patrick Sommier a frayé à travers ce roman-fleuve qui court sur quelques 2200 pages pour en extraire des figures clé et les relier à la réalité de l’école de l’Opéra de Pékin, qu’il côtoie régulièrement depuis sept ans. « Cette merveilleuse histoire de bandits d’honneur, pratiquant au plus haut niveau le culte de l’amitié et du désintéressement, de noblesse et d’aventure, évoque une autre histoire, au présent cette fois, celle de ces élèves de l’école d’opéra de Pékin apprenant passionnément un métier que la globalisation fragilise. » explique le metteur en scène et directeur de la MC93. En scène, il enlace des livrets du répertoire de l’Opéra de Pékin, des extraits du roman, ainsi que des propos d’élèves et de professeurs recueillis entre 2007 et 2009. Au bord de l’eau dévoile autrement l’apprentissage dans cette école d’exception et le long chemin de la maturité artistique.
