Un espace intérieur d’ombre, clos de murs immenses avec selon les instants, l’élévation d’une mince ouverture longitudinale de lumière. « Peut-être que c’est le dernier endroit dans cette ville où on entend du silence ». Résonne en même temps le son clair et pur de chants d’oiseaux dans le salon familial de la maison cossue. L’origine de la fortune paternelle repose sur le commerce des armes : « Nous voudrions demander officiellement à Ori de vouloir bien accepter la tête de nos affaires ». Le père, un parrain éclairé et âgé, accompagné de son fils aîné, aimerait confier son entreprise dans les mains de son dernier fils, sujet brillant retiré de l’armée, et atteint d’une maladie des yeux. Mais le projet filial semble différer : « J’aimerais faire quelque chose qui soit vrai et profond ». Il y a aussi trois filles, un rappel lointain des Trois sœurs de Tchékhov, si ce n’est que le regard sur la valeur du travail a changé. L’aînée qui aime ce frère et ses énigmes attend un enfant ; à ses côtés, son époux mal-aimé à la recherche de la vérité du monde dans le désordre de discours insolites. La deuxième sœur est la « princesse » admirée ; travaillant à la télé pour une émission de variétés, elle sort du salon et revient, s’absente pour apparaître sur le petit écran. Son discours est tendu par la volonté d’élucider les comportements de ses proches et d’en dominer le sens : « Nous devons continuer à nous parler, à en parler », ou bien « nous regardons les autres mourir…» Des poncifs.
Un théâtre attentif au secret de la présence humaine, à son inconnu, à ses possibles.
La petite sœur est adoptée, substitutive d’une disparue du nom racinien de Phèdre. L’orpheline semble plutôt s’accomplir dans la différence d’avec sa communauté adoptive. Enfin, une étrangère muette au parler inconnu : l’Annonciation vient semer le trouble et le malaise par sa liberté même, levant le voile sur les insatisfactions d’un univers policé, suscitant d’autant le désir. Une figure féminine dont les moindres gestes subjuguent tandis qu’on parle du Bien, du Mal, de la Beauté, du Travail… C’est l’intruse, à la façon de l’ange de Théorème de Pasolini, ou de Mort à Venise de Thomas Mann par Visconti. En elle, repose la profondeur de l’obscurité, celle d’être au monde. La fresque de Joël Pommerat est élégante et raffinée. Maîtrise théâtrale d’images chic et glacées, depuis les silhouettes de magazine de mode, robes d’été et talons hauts, jusqu’aux décideurs en costume sombre, revers blancs de manches de chemise, assis à la table de réunion, les mains posées sur la nappe immaculée. Du silence de qualité saisi à travers la lourdeur des pas et les micros HF pour voix abyssales. Temps différés, quête d’utopies nouvelles, méditation libre, dépouillée et habitée de visions, rêves et cauchemars, restes de guerre privée ou collective. Un théâtre attentif au secret de la présence humaine, à son inconnu, à ses possibles.
