Théâtre de La Tempête / d’après André Brink / adaptation et mes Nelson-Rafaell Madel
Lorsque l’écrivain André Brink reçoit en 1980 le Prix Médicis étranger en 1980 pour Une saison blanche et sèche, il a déjà publié trois autres romans, dont Au plus noir de la nuit, interdit à sa sortie par la censure sud-africaine. On le sait, ce fils de colons afrikaners à l’adolescence privilégiée ne s’est rendu compte qu’à 24 ans, en 1959, lors d’un voyage à Paris, de l’ignoble réalité de l’apartheid. Devenant ensuite un infatigable défenseur des droits humains et de plus en plus radical contre ce régime, l’écrivain a marqué des générations entières. C’est le cas de Nelson-Rafaell Madel pour qui Au plus noir de la nuit s’est imposé comme un « véritable partenaire de vie », y compris dans sa dimension théâtrale « avec ses dialogues ciselés, des scènes puissantes, des envolées poétiques… et ces personnages qui prennent corps pour raconter ». S’en faisant l’adaptateur et le metteur en scène, il explore le thème de l’exil et affronte cette question : « comment survivre et s’épanouir dans des époques et des pays marqués par l’injustice, l’inégalité, les fléaux, les conflits ? »
