La nouvelle aventure de la compagnie Les Brigands nous offre la découverte d’un ouvrage inconnu ou presque de l’exceptionnel Claude Terrasse, créé en 1901 puis presque aussitôt interdit parce que jugé trop osé… Fantaisie médiévale joyeusement anachronique, Au temps des croisades a été conçu sur un livret de Franc-Nohain, ami d’Alfred Jarry et d’Alphonse Allais, surtout connu pour avoir été le librettiste de Ravel pour L’Heure espagnole. L’ouvrage a pour point de départ la mésaventure de la jeune châtelaine Dame Bertrade qui voit son mari partir pour la croisade au lendemain de sa nuit de noces sans que celui-ci ne prenne le temps d’ôter son heaume et donc de lui révéler son visage… Pour le metteur en scène Philippe Nicolle, issu du monde du théâtre de rue (il dirige la troupe des 26000 couverts), l’objectif est de célébrer la vocation populaire de l’opérette : « Par son sens de la fiction, elle pose sans détours un théâtre basique, plein de clichés. L’opérette m’évoque surtout un monde plein de joie. Monter une opérette aujourd’hui, c’est revendiquer sans complexe cette joie. C’est un formidable terrain de jeu que l’on doit et veut investir comme des enfants. Ce répertoire oublié, délaissé, est presque devenu tabou, trop kitsch ! Je voudrais célébrer la naïveté et l’enthousiasme propres à ce genre, retrouver « le jus » dans cette matière a priori désuète. Bien avant la mode, j’ai été très influencé, voire obsédé, par les Monty Python ; je retrouve dans le livret de Franc-Nohain ce goût pour les collages et les anachronismes, un certain surréalisme qui m’enchante ». Avec aussi Christophe Grapperon pour la direction musicale, les neuf musiciens d’un petit orchestre « réduit » par Thibault Perrine, et les jeunes voix de la Compagnie Les Brigands rompue aux finesses et à la drôlerie des ouvrages légers français.
