Audience orchestre une confrontation entre Vanek, manœuvre d’une brasserie et aussi écrivain de théâtre, et Sladek, brasseur porté sur la boisson, qui le convoque et lui propose une promotion en échange d’une faveur : Vanek doit livrer à la police une information sur ses propres faits et gestes. Ce huis clos absurde et glaçant, typique du fonctionnement des sociétés totalitaires, a été rédigé en 1975, après le Printemps de Prague et deux ans avant que Vaclav Havel ne signe la Charte 77, pétition demandant le respect des Droits de l’homme en Tchécoslovaquie, et Vanek rappelle ici la figure de l’auteur dissident. Nikson Pitaqaj de la compagnie Libre d’Esprit met en scène la pièce en un acte avec quatre comédiens qui se partagent les rôles par tirage au sort – un écho oppressant à l’arbitraire du pouvoir ! -, ils revisitent ainsi « la dialectique hégélienne du Maître et de l’Esclave… avec ironie. »
