Avant de s’attaquer à des questions plus directement politiques et sociales, Lars Noren écrit dans les années 80-90 une série de pièces explorant les galeries obscures des relations familiales. Dans Automne et Hiver, où les parents conversent avec leurs deux filles autour du repas, Noren sublime les histoires familiales en réflexion universelle sur l’homme. Eva, la première des deux filles, est mariée et riche comme ses parents. Ann, la cadette, est à part, séparée, et trime comme souvent les mères seules. C’est elle, l’électron libre écrivant pour le théâtre, qui pousse à ce que chacun se dise. Au-delà des destins particuliers – et ordinaires – se dessine dans cette pièce l’image d’un être humain en pleine déréliction, condamné à composer avec cette « tristesse qui nous suit toute la vie » dès lors que se brise l’harmonie originelle. L’écriture de Noren poursuit la route d’un théâtre où les mots ne permettent que difficilement de communiquer. Il n’y a pas d’issue, pour Lars Noren, dans le fantasme d’un théâtre cathartique. Le jeu, entre incarnation et détachement, fait résonner dans une mise en scène dépouillée, l’éloquent écho de tout ce vide, de ce silence envahissant.
