Sur le plateau de la table métallique, autour de laquelle sont installés les quatre protagonistes, brille le cristal des verres et des carafes. Les liqueurs chatoyantes évoquent l’harmonie confortable d’une vie bourgeoise aisée, prête à la fête et tout à la joie des retrouvailles mensuelles. Mais les pieds de la table sont faits d’entrelacs qui laissent soupçonner que les rapports entre les membres de la famille sont plus emberlificotés et scabreux qu’il n’y paraît : la surface cache des profondeurs inquiétantes. Les relations entre les parents et les deux filles, se révèlent, au fur et à mesure que tombent les masques, délétères et odieuses.
Névrose et roman familial
Ewa, l’aînée, riche, bien mariée et bien mise, évoque son anorexie adolescente et son désespoir de ne pas pouvoir avoir d’enfant ; Henrik, le père, avoue son alcoolisme ; Margareta, la mère, admet qu’elle a aimé ailleurs, faute d’être comprise chez elle… Le dispositif scénique joue des mouvements de la table, qui offre au public différents points de vue sur le drame, à mesure que celui-ci se complexifie et s’intensifie. L’apparent réalisme des dialogues est très adroitement déconstruit par un remarquable travail de l’adresse. L’étroit rapport entre la scène et la salle participe à l’impression d’étouffement aliénant de la situation ; les comédiens, confondant de justesse, campent leurs personnages avec une aisance et une vérité peu communes.
