D’Andy de Groat, chorégraphe français d’origine américaine, on connaît les recherches sur le tournoiement répétitif, la collaboration avec Robert Wilson et les relectures du répertoire classique qu’il a créées après son installation en France, en 1982. Avec Autour de la folie d’Igitur, une nouvelle facette du chorégraphe s’annonce : c’est à la suite d’une invitation des Hivernales d’Avignon, qui souhaitait rendre hommage à Stéphane Mallarmé, que cette pièce est née. Un projet hors normes, comme le souligne Andy de Groat lui-même : « Voici un rassemblement d’interprètes exceptionnels mêlés à des séquences captées à la Chartreuse de Villeneuve-lez-Avignon en février 2009. Un texte inachevé et un sonnet de Stéphane Mallarmé, Le Cygne – mais un cygne portant une cagoule. Prétextes/squelettes pour réunir des éléments disparates et les accorder avec quelques musiques fétiches. Une valse de contrastes choquants d’une farouche beauté… graffiti pour un mur blanc. »
