Composé et créé au stalag, le Quatuor pour la fin du temps de Messiaen décline en huit mouvements une théologie musicale nourrie par L’Apocalypse de Saint-Jean, qui met en valeur, tour à tour, chacun des solistes, dans une écriture d’une intensité rayonnante. Esquissée en 1940, la Sonate pour violoncelle et piano de Poulenc n’est achevée qu’en 1948 et se distingue par une jolie Cavatine. Œuvre créée pendant l’exil aux États-Unis, Contrastes résulte d’une commande faite à Bartok par Joseph Szigeti et Benny Goodman. Imprégnée des rythmes de l’Europe de l’est, la partition exige une grande virtuosité. Quant à Orages d’acier, dont sera joué le premier mouvement, Raphaël Sévère a puisé son inspiration dans le récit homonyme de Jünger, et reprend le même effectif, clarinette, violon et piano.
