Deux immenses compositeurs viennois, dont l’œuvre se situe dans le prolongement de celle de leur aîné Gustav Mahler, sont réunis à ce programme « de midi ». Le premier, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, né à Brno en 1897, va bientôt fêter ses 14 ans lorsque Mahler meurt le 18 mai 1911. Mais le jeune homme, enfant prodige adulé par la société viennoise, a déjà eu l’occasion d’être présenté à Mahler qui crie aussitôt au génie. Sur le départ pour les Etats-Unis, il doit renoncer à le prendre pour élève, mais l’oriente vers Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871 – 1942), l’autre compositeur au programme de ce concert, qui deviendra son professeur. Korngold triomphera dans le domaine de l’opéra avec Die Tote Stadt (La Ville morte) en 1920, avant de devoir fuir l’Europe et le nazisme et de devenir un géant de la musique de cinéma à Hollywood. On pourra découvrir avec émotion son Trio pour piano et cordes en ré majeur, op. 1, œuvre de jeunesse composée en 1908-1910. En deuxième partie de programme, Alexander von Zemlinsky, dernier géant de l’ère post-romantique viennoise, sera lui aussi à l’honneur avec l’un de ses premiers opus, son Trio pour piano, clarinette ou alto et violoncelle en ré mineur, composé à l’âge de 15 ans.
