Clarifions d’emblée que nous parlons ici d’Avishai Cohen le trompettiste, et non du contrebassiste, car l’homonymie prête parfois à confusion. Israélien d’origine lui aussi, passé par New York, sociétaire du label ECM, ce musicien dirige depuis plusieurs années un quartet qui n’a cessé de gagner en profondeur et en liberté, au point qu’il fait penser par son aisance et sa capacité à se mouvoir dans la musique au dernier quartet du regretté Wayne Shorter, récemment disparu. Marqué par l’exemple de Miles Davis que, pourtant, il ne singe jamais, Avishai Cohen développe au fil de ses concerts une musique où les formes semblent importer moins que le flux, porté par le jeu tout en mouvement du batteur Ziv Ravitz et le pointillisme délicat du pianiste Yonathan Avishai. Entendre cette musique en club est un privilège pour les oreilles.
