Théâtre de Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines / Trio de choc
Avec, à ses côtés, le pianiste Elchin Shirinov, originaire d’Azerbaïdjan, et la jeune batteuse israélienne Roni Kaspi (la vingtaine à peine), Avishai Cohen semble avoir retrouvé des partenaires qui le ramènent à ce qui a fait sa force pendant vingt ans : une capacité à architecturer le groove à des métriques complexes, à faire monter la tension sur des mises en place impeccables, qui n’empêchent ni le lyrisme, ni la vélocité. Son dernier album en date, « Shifting Sands », le rappelle, qui renoue avec l’inspiration des disques qui ont positionné le contrebassiste en tête de gondole, à commencer par « Gently Disturbed » avec Shai Maestro et Mark Giuliana. Le nouvel Avishai Cohen marche clairement dans le sillon du trio qui a fait des émules partout dans le monde, mais qui s’en plaindrait ?
