Professeurs associés au Conservatoire de Liège et au Rits de Bruxelles, les deux metteurs en scène, Jos Verbist et Raven Ruëll rêvaient depuis longtemps de monter Baal. Cette « espèce de petite autobiographie du jeune poète qui fonce contre tout, fiurait depuis très longtemps dans la liste de nos envies » dit Jos Verbist. Lorsque Brecht écrit Baal, il a vingt ans, signe Bert, et n’a pas encore fait du théâtre le terreau de son génie. Il fraie avec les spartakistes et a en haine la bourgeoisie capitaliste et belliciste, ce Moloch assoiffé de sang, qui vient de précipiter au charnier de la Grande Guerre d’innombrables victimes.
Seul contre tous
Face à cette société et à ses valeurs délétères, face au cynisme drapé de notabilité, se dresse Baal, jouisseur sans entraves, corrompu et corrupteur, pervers dévorateur de femmes, monstre cru et cruel, sans foi ni loi. Antipathique et pourtant séduisant, Baal « fait ce que les autres n’oseraient que dire, penser ou rêver », disent les deux metteurs en scène, qui veulent faire de ce personnage le parangon de « l’âge où il faut faire des choix et entamer la quête de sa place dans la vie et le monde ». Avec une distribution de jeunes acteurs néerlandophones et francophones, Jos Verbist et Raven Ruëll plongent au cœur même du thème de la pièce : la jeunesse, « en cherchant moins ce qui peut encore choquer au jour d’aujourd’hui, mais plutôt ce qui peut encore mettre le public mal à l’aise ».
