Surnommé le Cantor de Leipzig pour les fonctions qu’il a exercées dans les deux principales églises de la ville, Saint-Thomas et Saint-Nicolas, Bach a aussi activement participé à la vie musicale profane de la cité saxonne, ainsi qu’en témoignent ses contributions au Café Zimmermann, avec le Collegium Musicum dont il est le directeur à partir de 1729. Aux côtés de ses élèves, parmi lesquels on compte ses deux fils aînés, il fait entendre ses concertos qu’il arrange parfois pour les instruments à sa disposition, à l’exemple du BWV 1060, dont on pense qu’il fut d’abord écrit pour violon et hautbois. Auprès d’un autre concerto pour deux clavecins, le BWV 1061, Pierre Hantaï et Maude Gratton, laquelle dirige son ensemble Il Convito, livrent un condensé de l’assimilation par Bach des styles de l’Europe de son temps, en particulier de l’école française qu’il admirait tant, illustrée ici avec François Couperin. Les deux solistes défendront également Wilhelm Friedemann, dont la carrière et la postérité ont été éclipsées par son père et ses frères.
