Formé auprès de Ton Koopman, Masaaki Suzuki a suivi l’exemple de son maître et a enregistré sur près de trois décennies, avec le Bach Collegium Japan qu’il dirige depuis 1990, une intégrale des cantates du Cantor de Leipzig. Après une défiance initiale de la part des salles et des maisons de disques, ses lectures lumineuses et investies font désormais référence, au-delà même du corpus de Bach. C’est à cette figure tutélaire que revient le chef japonais avec son ensemble, avec l’un des sommets du répertoire, la Messe en si mineur. Vaste fresque œcuménique, l’ouvrage fusionne la forme liturgique catholique avec l’esprit de la foi luthérienne, dans un épitomé des styles musicaux passés et contemporains du compositeur allemand, qui compile quelques-unes des meilleures pages du maître – il était d’usage à l’époque de reprendre des partitions sur des textes nouveaux. Dans l’histoire de l’interprétation de ce chef-d’œuvre, Masaaki Suzuki fera entendre sa lecture aux côtés des plus grandes.
