Il a grandi loin de la terre natale africaine de ses parents, la Sierra Leone : sa formation musicale et scolaire s’est déroulée en Angleterre et c’est de Belgique qu’il a pris son envol de musicien. « J’ai été prédestiné à vivre mon enfance, mon adolescence et ma vie d’adulte entre deux continents, l’Afrique et l’Europe, mais les sons et les rythmes africains ont toujours vécu en moi » résume-t-il. Après un beau parcours de leader entamé avec un premier album solo en 2001 et de prestigieuses collaborations comme sideman (de Youssou N’Dour à Vanessa Paradis), Bai Kamara Jr signe aujourd’hui un disque solitaire et profond dans lequel il a enregistré toutes les voix et parties instrumentales. Un disque de blues personnel, sensible et coloré, où il renoue avec l’héritage de ses modèles Big Bill Bronzy ou encore John Lee Hooker. « Le projet « Salone » (qui signifie Sierra Leone en langue krio) me permet enfin une plongée dans mes racines africaines. Jamais auparavant je n’avais eu la force d’entreprendre ce travail. Bien que je sois né en Sierra Leone, je n’ai jamais joué ou fait de la musique en Afrique… » confie-t-il. La voix est chaude, la guitare mordante, et le cœur gros comme ça, nourri du besoin irréversible de remonter le temps africain de son existence.
