Il fallait de grandes œuvres et de grands chorégraphes pour réussir à montrer l’évolution du ballet et l’héritage que l’on retrouve encore dans les pièces contemporaines. Ici, le programme redonne corps à trois ballets – deux pièces courtes et un extrait de Raymonda – et par là même à des solos et duos d’anthologie. Dans Les Quatre tempéraments, Balanchine marque les développements possibles entre la danse et la musique, affirmant son mouvement en totale complicité avec les thèmes et variations de Paul Hindemith. Ici, le ballet devient abstrait, tout comme les sentiments et les éléments qui ont inspiré les créateurs.
Une histoire mouvementée pour chaque œuvre, comme l’histoire de la danse
L’histoire du ballet Raymonda est aussi mouvementée que son livret. C’est Marius Petipa qui en est à l’origine, créant ainsi une pièce emblématique de la danse classique par ses variations ou ses pas de deux. Quand Rudolf Noureev acquiert sa liberté en tant qu’artiste et chorégraphe, c’est naturellement vers Raymonda qu’il se tourne. Il y retravaillera tout au long de son parcours, jusqu’à l’ultime version créée pour le Ballet de l’Opéra de Paris lors de sa prise de fonction de Directeur de la Danse. C’est d’ailleurs lui qui parviendra à imposer William Forsythe, que l’on verra ici à travers Artifact Suite : une œuvre qui révèle la modernité et la fulgurante beauté du travail du chorégraphe, tout en déstructurations, déséquilibres, virtuosité et vitesse.
