Musique de chambre. L’intitulé du disque donne déjà quelques clefs pour bien entendre les enjeux de cette rencontre. Sur le ton de la confidence, le Français Vincent Ségal et le Malien Ballaké Sissoko ont enregistré cet album après avoir beaucoup répété, de manière libre et informelle, dans le studio de Vincent Ségal. « Nous avons passé des heures à jouer, juste pour le plaisir, tout acoustique. », résume le Parisien. C’est ainsi que les deux musiciens apprennent à se connaître, à partager des idées. « Jouer aux côtés de Vincent me pousse à progresser sur mon instrument. Il me donne des idées et il a vite compris comment fonctionne notre musique. », assure Ballaké.
Amitié et proximité
Résultat : les deux esthètes donnent deux concerts qui ont valeur d’exemples quant à leurs choix esthétiques, le premier lors d’un festival de musiques populaires à Libreville, le second à l’Opéra de Lyon. Entre la sphère mandingue et l’univers du classique, entre ces deux cordes anciennes, deux nobles instruments de cour qu’ils ont fait entrer dans le champ du populaire, le dialogue s’est construit avec le temps nécessaire pour bâtir un répertoire. « C’est une histoire de feeling et d’écoute mutuelle. On a la même vision de la vie, du rapport à la musique et à la famille. », insiste le joueur de kora, tandis que le Français lui répond au diapason : « Ce disque est avant tout une affaire de proximité. Voilà pourquoi on l’a enregistré de nuit, sans bruit ni effets. Pour être au plus près de ceux qui vont l’écouter. »
