Baroufe à Chioggia (Baruffe chiozotte) est une comédie en trois actes, écrite en dialecte vénitien, représentée en 1762 pour la première fois à Venise pendant le Carnaval. La forme de la comédie et la satire sociale plaisent à cet homme de théâtre prolixe né à Venise en 1707 et mort en 1793 à Paris.
Goldoni est un auteur inscrit dans la vie de son époque, observateur minutieux de la bourgeoisie comme du petit peuple, depuis l’arrogance des grands jusqu’à la bassesse des humbles provoquée par la misère. Belles âmes ou bien coquins en goguette, la condition humaine est l’objet d’une étude incisive autant qu’enjouée. Ainsi, dans Baroufe à Chioggia, ce sont les pêcheurs qui sont à l’honneur, mieux encore, leurs épouses restées sur le rivage de Chioggia, village isolé sur la Lagune de Venise. Bavardes comme des pies, ces cancanières raccommodent les filets tandis que leur homme pêche le poisson de mer pour subvenir aux besoins du ménage, tenu de plus à payer une redevance aux grands abuseurs du pays, comme l’Illustrissime. Une vie de malheur où la gaieté et le goût de vivre n’en restent pas moins des ingrédients majeurs dans cette cuisine loufoque.
Le théâtre de Herbez tient du café-théâtre et de l’invective
Toffolo, aimé de Checca, offre des fraises à Lucietta, fiancée de Tita-Nane… Disputes, imbroglios, les femmes parlent et jacassent exagérément jusqu’à ce que le retour de leur mari ne fasse qu’envenimer l’affaire. Hurlements, vociférations, bagarres, les comédiens dessinent une chorégraphie burlesque réglée au millimètre à travers une gestuelle farcesque de figures roturières. Les rires et les sourires tournent à la grimace, les révérences à la cabriole et les coups de colère aux coups de griffes animales. Les filles sont délurées à souhait, mauvaise foi et ragots assurés. Le théâtre de Herbez tient du café-théâtre et de l’invective adressée au public. Même les méchants font leur numéro, comme Vicenzo (Yvan Herbez, un sadique caricatural et efficace), l’homme louche, qui simule coups bas et mesquineries hard. Voilà un festival de rugissements et de pas de danse équivoques qui provoquent le rire que renforce encore l’apparition du Commendatore déguisé en César, façon Gotlib dans Astérix. Mais c’est bien grâce à la sagesse de cet homme de pouvoir, attentif à la populace travailleuse et gouailleuse, que tous s’accordent. Beaucoup de bruit pour rien, si ce n’est le temps d’un spectacle vivant, cabrioles, sauts en l’air, pitreries, gifles qui claquent, pleurs et gémissements. Des retrouvailles avec le bonheur partagé d’être en vie, au-delà des conflits.
