Dans le bureau d’un avoué de Wall Street où travaillent trois employés aux écritures, l’accroissement du labeur exige le recrutement d’un nouveau scribe : Bartleby, zélé, discret et efficace. Mais vient le jour du refus où Bartleby « cesse de jouer le jeu des hommes », comme le remarque Daniel Pennac, et annonce sereinement et toujours poliment « I would prefer not to », grippant ainsi la machine et introduisant l’imprévisible et l’inattendu dans l’ordre du monde. L’employeur essaie de comprendre, l’employé refuse d’expliquer. « Un face-à-face entre deux solitudes, donc : Bartleby, l’homme qui ne veut plus jouer à l’homme, et le narrateur, l’homme qui ne peut vivre sans comprendre les hommes. Le duel de nos deux tentations favorites, en somme. », dit Daniel Pennac qui interprète l’adaptation scénique du texte de Melville. Une proposition théâtrale interrogeant avec acuité notre monde qui se refuse aveuglément à questionner son affolement hyperactif : que se passe-t-il si on renonce à l’urgence et si on refuse d’obéir aux diktats de la productivité ?
