En 1768, à l’âge de 12 ans, Mozart signe son premier opéra en composant cette pastorale initiatique inspirée d’une parodie du « Devin du Village » de Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Cette remarquable production « de poche », mise en scène par Michel Fau, a été créée en 2007 lors du festival de Saint-Céré dans une formule instrumentale réduite pour quatuor à cordes et piano et avec l’apport de textes de Beaumarchais. Le metteur en scène a cherché à la fois à renouer avec l’esprit initial, spontané et nomade, du « spectacle de tréteau » de Bastien et Bastienne tout en soulignant le contenu d’un ouvrage par moments annonciateur de la Flûte enchantée… « C’est peut-être parce que Mozart n’a que douze ans quand il le compose et qu’une méchante tradition veut que cette partition soit exécutée par des enfants que Bastien, Bastienne est régulièrement associé à une « pastorale adolescente » charmante et légère ; alors que ce que Mozart nous dit est déjà essentiel et audacieux. En effet, il nous parle de la mélancolie, de l’amour fou, de la passion masochiste, de l’ambition sociale, de l’appât du gain, du chantage suicidaire, de l’espérance. Mozart dans le fond et dans la forme annonce déjà ses opéras à venir » souligne le metteur en scène. Avec Corine Durous (direction musicale et piano) et les chanteurs (et comédiens) Blandine Arnould, Raphaël Bremard et Jean-Claude Sarragosse.
