« Mon premier souvenir de Gregory est celui d’un jeune danseur plein d’énergie trônant au milieu d’une scène, une botte en caoutchouc à la main, scrutant d’un regard interrogateur le public, entre curiosité et rage… » confie Robyn Orlin. Depuis ce premier spectacle, Gregory Maqoma, qui lui aussi vit à Johannesburg, s’est affirmé comme l’un des plus talentueux artistes de la nouvelle génération en Afrique du Sud. Il parachève aujourd’hui sa trilogie Beautiful, amorcée en 2005 par un duo avec la vibrante Shanell Winlock, et poursuivie avec les cinq danseurs de sa compagnie Vuyani Dance Theatre. Pour le solo Beautiful me, il a demandé au Sud-africain Vincent Mantsoe, au Congolais Faustin Linyekula et à l’Indien Akram Khan, trois chorégraphes mariant danse traditionnelle et création contemporaine, de lui écrire des séquences de danse. Gregory Maqoma a ajusté ces phrases chorégraphiques selon les traits de sa personnalité pour composer une pièce qui diffracte trois styles différents. Une autre façon de découvrir l’univers de ces artistes.
