Fondé en 1981 par Frans Brüggen, l’Orchestre du XVIIIe siècle compte parmi les formations qui ont dépoussiéré, avec les instruments anciens, l’interprétation de la musique du Siècle des Lumières et du début du XIXe siècle. Sous la direction de Jonathan Darlington, la phalange néerlandaise restitue l’ambition révolutionnaire de deux pages majeures de Beethoven. Imaginée d’abord en hommage à Napoléon, avant de raturer la dédicace après le sacre de l’Empereur, la Symphonie n°3 op.55 repousse les dimensions du genre au-delà de ses limites classiques et constitue l’un des gestes inauguraux du Romantisme. Dans la même tonalité de mi bémol majeur, le Concerto pour piano n°5 op.73 pousse la forme concertante et les limites instrumentales de l’époque dans leurs retranchements. Le pianoforte magnifiera la clarté du jeu d’Alexander Melnikov et l’articulation expressive originale de ce jalon essentiel du répertoire.
