On ne se lasse pas de suivre le parcours et de percer les secrets de la personnalité singulière de ce jeune pianiste britannique. Découvert par ses compatriotes en 2004 – il est alors âgé de onze ans et remporte le concours de la BBC Young Musician –, Benjamin Grosvenor part à la conquête du public mélomane français en 2012, lorsqu’il rejoint l’écurie du label Decca pour un saisissant récital Chopin-Liszt-Ravel. Depuis, bien d’autres disques ont paru, mais l’on retrouve curieusement ces trois compositeurs au programme de ce nouveau récital parisien : Chopin avec la Sonate n°2 op.35, Ravel et son Tombeau de Couperin et enfin Liszt pour deux extraits des Années de pèlerinage : Venezia e Napoli. Les Six Préludes et Fugues opus 35 de Mendelssohn, également au menu de cette soirée musicale, confirment le goût du jeune dandy du piano anglais pour les programmes contrastés et nerveux, souvent éclatés en pièces courtes et sans rapport évident entre elles, où rayonnent ses qualités de coloriste et une élégance détachée très British.
