Pourquoi avoir choisi de mettre en scène le vrai Cyrano ?
Benjamin Lazar : Parce que je l’ai lu et que je me suis toujours beaucoup intéressé aux auteurs du premier 17e siècle, qu’on appelle libertins, et à Cyrano en particulier, qui est un personnage très attachant. Ce spectacle est né de l’envie de faire découvrir le vrai Cyrano caché par sa ré-appropriation littéraire, qui n’attend pas Rostand d’ailleurs mais commence dès la mort de Cyrano. Ce projet est également né de la rencontre avec les musiciens Benjamin Perrot et Florence Bolton et de l’envie de développer un dialogue entre la musique et le texte. Cyrano faisant parler les Lunaires en musique, ça s’y prêtait bien !
Cyrano, un libertin ?
B. L. : Dans libertin, il faut entendre avant tout liberté de penser le monde sans se le faire penser, souvent dans une jubilation qui est un goût de la vie et un plaisir des sens qui peut conduire à la revendication d’autres libertés et donc de la liberté sexuelle, le tout étant à comprendre dans un ensemble qui consiste à vouloir disposer de soi. Cyrano est vraiment dans cette liberté de pensée, dans cette liberté de ton très baroque. Ce roman tient du voyage philosophique du 18e siècle, bien sûr, mais est dépourvu de volonté didactique affirmée : Cyrano est avant tout un producteur de littérature. Il fait de tout plaisir d’écrire et de raconter.

Quels indices aviez-vous de la possibilité théâtrale de ce texte ?
B. L. : D’abord le fait que Cyrano a écrit du théâtre par ailleurs et que ça se sent dans son écriture. Une injonction commence le roman : « écoute, lecteur », faisant de la lecture quelque chose qui s’écoute, ce qu’elle était au 17e siècle. De plus, Cyrano sait conduire une histoire, avec des péripéties, de l’humour, du suspense : cela aussi pousse ce texte vers le théâtre. Le texte est tellement riche qu’il est en lui-même une machine théâtrale : c’est dans les articulations du texte que le théâtre se déploie. C’est pourquoi les éléments scéniques sont ceux que l’on pourrait trouver dans une bibliothèque : un escabeau, un pupitre, une chaise que l’alchimie avec le texte transforme au gré de la narration. Quant à la musique, le spectacle s’est construit en dialogue avec elle, en choisissant des compositeurs contemporains de Cyrano dont les recherches harmoniques complexes sont animées de la même ferveur créative que la sienne.
Pourquoi prendre le parti d’utiliser la déclamation du 17e siècle ?
C’est la prononciation qui était employée dans les théâtres et dans toute prestation publique et soutenue de la parole, différente de la prononciation négligée. Mais ce n’est pas un parti pris élitiste et le texte reste parfaitement audible. Certes, il faut quelques minutes pour s’y conformer, mais c’est le cas pour toute proposition théâtrale ! La langue se trouve ainsi amplifiée, rapprochant le mot et la chose dans la chair du mot. Ce travail de prononciation est un outil qui participe au spectacle et n’empêche en rien de saisir les classiques, si loin et si proches à la fois. C’est intéressant d’aller vers les œuvres en explorateur comme dans un pays étranger où l’on ne cherche pas forcément le semblable. La différence n’empêche en rien le rapprochement !
