Qui est Théophile de Viau ? Quelle est l’originalité des Amours tragiques de Pyrame et Thisbé ?
Benjamin Lazar : Un poète du début du XVIIème qui a marqué tout son siècle, extrêmement admiré mais aussi très critiqué, dont le destin fut tragique et la trajectoire fulgurante. Engagé dans son écriture, il en a payé les frais : après Pyrame et Thisbé, un procès pour impiété et athéisme lui a valu trois ans d’emprisonnement. Malgré sa grâce, il est mort peu après, de délabrement physique. Les Amours tragiques de Pyrame et Thisbé raconte une histoire d’amour célébrissime à l’époque, dont Roméo et Juliette a remplacé pour nous l’archétype. C’est la pièce d’un poète qui y a mis tout son savoir-faire. Il a écrit de la poésie pendant vingt ans et offre dans cette œuvre comme un condensé de tous les genres, impose un style très personnel et affirme une liberté d’écriture très particulière. L’aspect philosophique et politique est aussi très important : c’est la voix du poète révolté qu’on entend.

Quel est cet aspect ?
B. L. : Les deux héros s’opposent à la loi familiale mais Viau dresse aussi le portrait d’un roi tyran saisissant et dénonce le conflit entre intérêt personnel et intérêt d’Etat. On le lui a reproché, mais on lui a surtout reproché son opposition au Ciel et le fait d’affirmer la faiblesse des dieux, l’impossibilité de la résurrection et qu’il n’y a pas d’autre monde que celui où l’on vit. C’est vraiment une des très grandes pièces du XVIIème siècle et le fait qu’elle soit méconnue me donne encore plus envie de la monter. Les formes classiques n’y sont pas encore apprivoisées, les transitions entre les scènes ne sont pas écrites. C’est une pièce comme un animal sauvage qui n’a pas le poli qu’on trouvera plus tard. Il y a en elle quelque chose de l’archaïsme et de la violence d’un théâtre comme celui de Garnier. C’est passionnant car on n’est pas encore en territoire connu avec cette pièce-là même si on sent qu’elle irrigue toute la suite. Et puis ce n’est pas une écriture de la raison. Pyrame n’arrête pas de l’asséner : je crois que ta raison vaut moins que ma folie. Cette écriture s’autorise un invraisemblable délire poétique et amoureux qui ne sera redécouvert que par les romantiques.
Comment cette pièce s’inscrit-elle dans le patient et exigeant travail qui est le vôtre ?
B. L. : Je poursuis depuis plusieurs années un travail sur la langue et son rapport avec le corps de l’acteur, en réalisant une expression théâtrale contemporaine à partir d’éléments anciens. Ce qui m’intéresse, c’est de restituer un événement de langage, particulièrement avec cette pièce. Cela veut dire que tout d’un coup, la langue est en éruption, on assiste à une métamorphose du langage qui devient autre chose sur scène, comme l’acteur qui se transforme. Tout d’un coup se passe quelque chose qui ne peut pas se passer ailleurs : c’est ça le théâtre. Il s’agit de créer des apparitions, des figures inconnues : l’utilisation des techniques anciennes permet cette distance fondamentale entre la vie et la scène. Après avoir longtemps travaillé avec des musiciens baroques, nous avions envie, avec l’équipe de comédiens, de revenir à un laboratoire afin de travailler sur cette forme que nous utilisons. Isoler la musicalité propre de ce travail permet d’autant mieux de le mettre en valeur. Nous sommes des apprentis sorciers qui éprouvons notre démarche au plateau : il faut du temps pour éprouver ces formes-là et en créer quelque chose de vivant.
