C’est par l’harmonica que vous avez attrapé le virus du blues ?
Benoît Blue Boy : Oui, j’en avais toujours un dans la poche quand j’allais à l’école ! À cette époque, au milieu des années 50, personne n’en jouait en France, personne ne pouvait me renseigner. J’ai donc appris tout seul en jouant tout le temps ! Et puis, à un moment, je me suis dit : « il faut partir aux Etats-Unis ». Et je suis parti suivre les harmonicistes, voir comment ils faisaient.

En faisant le choix de chanter en français, vous vous êtes tout de suite démarqué des autres bluesmen. On dit souvent que c’est une langue difficile à faire « sonner », qu’en pensez-vous ?
B.B.B. : Quand je suis parti en Louisiane, j’ai entendu les mecs chanter en français. Il suffit d’avoir le phrasé de chez soi : moi, je chante en parisien, je coupe la moitié des mots comme la manière de parler qu’on a ici. Chanter du blues en français en écrivant des chansons comme si c’était une poésie de Rimbaud, ce n’est pas possible. Une chanson, ce n’est pas fait pour être écrit, mais pour être chanté.Parce que je suis dyslexique, je n’écris pas mes morceaux, je les chante tout de suite. Je m’arrange pour que le phrasé colle dans la musique dont j’ai envie. Et s’il faut que j’enlève trois syllabes à un mot, je les enlève, ça ne me dérange pas !
Chanter en français, c’était aussi une manière d’assumer qui vous êtes ?
B.B.B. : J’habite la moitié de l’année en Inde, je suis toujours en train de voyager, mais je suis parisien ! Je suis né en 46 : les Américains étaient en France, mais si ça avait été les Russes, peut-être que j’aurais chanté autre chose ! (rires) On écoutait les chants français et américains, cela m’a toujours semblé normal… Pour moi, le blues, c’est une autre manière de faire du rock’n’roll : je suis né en écoutant Ray Charles d’un côté et les Chaussettes Noires de l’autre. Et à un moment je me suis dit : j’ai habité aux Etats-Unis pendant assez longtemps pour savoir que je ne suis pas américain et que je ne veux pas l’être. Donc quand je suis rentré ici, je ne pouvais que chanter en français.
