Berlioz mettait un fol espoir dans son Benvenuto Cellini, premier de ses ouvrages à accéder à l’Opéra de Paris (le seul de son vivant). L’échec fut cinglant et laissa le compositeur amer : « Nous avons eu tort, dira-t-il, de croire qu’un livret d’opéra (…) sur une passion d’artiste pourrait plaire à un public parisien ». Benvenuto Cellini est, en effet, une célébration du génie et, au-delà de celui de l’orfèvre florentin, c’est celui de Berlioz qui s’y illustre. Dynamitant les conventions, cet opéra semi-seria passe par tous les états, du solennel au trivial, de la pompe à la kermesse, mais toujours en un festival de chant et d’orchestre magnifique. Il reste que Benvenuto Cellini, quelle que soit l’ardeur qu’on y mette, est bien difficile à mettre en scène. Terry Gilliam, l’ex-Monty Python, auteur du film culte Brazil, n’a jamais eu peur des causes scéniques perdues ni de la démesure. Sa production, dont il signe les décors, s’ingénie à remplir la scène, à la saturer de mouvements (la chorégraphe Leah Hausman co-signe la mise en scène). Cela semble la bonne option pour éviter que l’œuvre ne sombre dans la pesanteur – ce serait dommage tant la musique est vive. Sous la direction de Philippe Jordan, la distribution est emmenée par John Osborn, qui tenait déjà le rôle-titre à Amsterdam en 2015.
