La tradition de Rome défend jalousement la pureté de son sang, elle interdit à son empereur le mariage avec une reine étrangère. Titus, nommé empereur en 79 avant J-C, est amoureux de Bérénice, reine de Palestine, aimée encore par Antiochus, roi de Comagène. La gloire impériale a le devoir d’abandonner la belle orientale. Aussi, avant de donner congé à Bérénice, faut-il à Titus faire l’aveu douloureux de son dilemme entre la loi et le sentiment. La déclaration n’est source d’angoisse que parce qu’elle témoigne d’un engagement amoureux sincère. La beauté de l’œuvre racinienne, plainte et élégie, se nourrit de la suspension toujours retardée de cet instant critique, attendu autant que redouté. Titus doit faire admettre à Bérénice le renoncement et la séparation à l’amiable dans des adieux à leur bonheur intime. Ni sang ni morts dans Bérénice, « il suffit… que tout s’y ressente de cette tristesse majestueuse qui fait tout le plaisir de la tragédie », écrit Racine. Même Antiochus ne tire nul bénéfice des amants divisés. Pour le metteur en scène Faustin Linyekula, né au Zaïre devenu Congo, la pièceraconte l’expulsion de l’étranger, banni, exilé, rejeté tels ses concitoyens du continent africain en situation irrégulière et reconduits à la frontière par rapatriement forcé.
Pour décor à ce huis clos intense, des vêtures aristocratiques
La domination sur autrui appartient au pays hospitalier qui trie, sélectionne, accepte ou refuse. Bérénice a préparé moralement Titus à la gloire militaire, elle n’est en rien « étrangère » à Rome. La force tragique de la reine, bafouée par des règles contraignantes, tient à son refus d’un aveu d’échec. Si elle quitte la scène, elle part sans se donner la mort, une façon de renier la loi romaine de l’héroïsme guerrier et de la glorification de la virilité – de vains fanatismes. La figure féminine étrangère désamorce les enjeux de pouvoir, à l’image des choix dramaturgiques de Linyekula. Stature à peine tourmentée et voix abyssale, l’Africain Bakary Sangaré incarne la dignité impériale dans le port de la cuirasse du Titus de Grüber, une pièce du patrimoine des costumes de la Comédie-Française. Pour décor à ce huis clos intense, des vêtures aristocratiques suspendues et précieuses. Shahrokh Moshkin Ghalam, acteur d’origine persane, incarne Bérénice sans travestissement, maintien royal, port de tête et marche ample : c’est La Jeune Turque du peintre Jean-François Portaels. Céline Samie est un Antiochus touché par l’amour interdit. Les rôles de confidents reviennent à Jean-Pierre Raffaelli, prestance majestueuse et sonorités modulées d’outre-tombe. Un point de vue éblouissant d’élégance.
