Ce n’est pas la mort ou l’épée qui menacent dans Bérénice, mais le désespoir et les larmes, l’exil d’un amour véritable et entier. Titus empereur de Rome et Bérénice reine de Palestine s’aiment. L’opinion de Rome n’étant pas favorable à l’union avec une reine étrangère, Titus décide de renvoyer Bérénice : régner plutôt que vivre ! Ami de l’empereur et amoureux secret, le roi de Commagène Antiochus récuse l’idée de ce mariage. Les sentiments sont violents, l’instabilité règne, et la parole existe dans toute sa puissance.
Courant d’émotions
« Le théâtre est pour moi une affaire de texte porté par des comédiens », souligne Olivier Chapelet, qui recherche la confrontation à de grands textes dramatiques. Depuis sept ans, il travaille avec le même noyau de comédiens, qui au fil du temps a gagné en maturité et en force. « Nous y trouvons de l’aisance, de la liberté et une confiance mutuelle qui ouvre de vastes horizons, », confie-t-il, heureux de servir cette langue splendide déployant « un courant d’émotions que peu d’œuvres n’égalent. » C’est dans l’exercice de la volonté que réside le cœur du propos, « la source d’un combat d’une extraordinaire modernité », et dilemme sublimé par l’alexandrin… Avec notamment Aude Koegler (Bérénice), Gaël Chaillat (Titus), et Yann Siptrott (Antiochus).
